I loved this book for a number of reasons.
1. It has the most in-depth, scientific look at laughter that I have found.
2. It gives great insight on what makes people laugh, why we laugh, and the different types of laughing.
3. The 10 tips for increasing laughter appendix.
I have read a lot of different articles and research papers about what makes people laugh, but they were all cut short for some reason or another. Provine's book takes laughter and makes it feel like just another obtainable thing (which is nice, because sometimes when I'm on stage I need to be reminded that people can laugh even though they may not be). The book gives laughter and the reasons behind it a face, which allows me to see laughter as something I can control, and need to control in order to have a successful career as a comedian. How people laugh is a very interesting thing to take note of. Laughter is communication based, and it can be interpreted and manipulated to portray anything you want it to. Maniacal to sarcastic to complete loss of self. Laughter has so many varieties that it's an art just to decipher which one is which.
I really liked the tips because I think everyone needs to learn to laugh more. Life is too fun to not laugh about everything.
